Ron Cartavio: A Recap of the Official WA State Launch Party & Afterparty Events

The series of Ron Cartavio official launch party events began at Liberty in a similar style as many of our meetings. Rum-loving individuals slowly found their way to the back room and seating became scarce thereafter. This meeting marked The Rum Collective’ssecond “official” rum launch of the year in Washington State; however in this case, there was a whole line of interesting rums, instead of a single expression. Rum from Peru, you say? Known more for its pisco and wine, rum didn’t register yet as one of Peru’s many fine crafts. Not surprisingly, guests left with a new perspective. This new view hastened by the refreshing greeting cocktail created exclusively for our meeting by one of Liberty’s (and Seattle’s) more than talented rum-oriented bartenders, Megan Radke.

Checking out Demetrio Tequila

Tequila is big business these days. Consumers have been bitten by the agave bug, eagerly snapping up spendy bottles that fifty years ago would have been labeled “Mexican brandy.” While there are plenty of big brands (Jose Cuervo, Patrón, Sauza) and celebrity-backed brands (George Clooney and Casa Noble, Justin Timberlake and Sauza 901) clamoring for attention, there are also dozens of decades-old Mexican distilleries quietly (relatively speaking) producing top notch tequilas. One such brand that’s somewhat new to the U.S. market is Demetrio.

Ron Cartavio – Peruvian rums that belong in your arsenal

Peruvian rums that belong in your arsenal

Ron Cartavio

By Matt Pietrek

Close your eyes, and image a dark, intense sipping rum, created in a distillery surrounded by vast sugarcane fields and then aged for a decade or longer. Odds are you’re picturing an idyllic Caribbean island like Jamaica or Martinique. You probably weren’t thinking of a coastal valley just fifteen minutes from the Pacific Ocean in South America. Sure, Peru is known for Machu Picchu, pisco, and wine, but rum? Believe it or not, rum from Peru makes sense – numerous South American countries support sugar industries and produce rum, including Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, and Argentina. Knowing that, it’s not a stretch to imagine that Peru might also play in the cane spirits world. Since the high-end Cartavio rums started appearing on shelves around 2008, they’ve won a bushel of awards at spirit tasting competitions. Let’s check it out.

The Cartavio story starts in 1782, when Domingo Cartavio purchased land in the Chicama valley of central Peru, near the Pacific Coast. Sugar cane and other agricultural products have been grown there for centuries. Fast forwarding to the late 1800s, the agricultural operations were purchased by W.R. Grace, at one time a Peruvian steamship company that these days is a Maryland-based chemical conglomerate. In 1929, W.R. Grace started the Ron Cartavio plant to begin producing rum. Over the subsequent turbulent decades, the fortunes of the sugar and rum production waxed and waned, and in 1968 the Peruvian government took over its operations. This did not lead to stability, however.

Clear color. Delicate, interesting, savory aromas of pickled green tomatoes, golden raisins, champagne vinaigrette, and dried banana and edamame with a satiny, lively, fruity medium body and a peppery, intriguing, medium-length reduced orange, pickled melon rind and peppers, honey, and pepper finish. A fun, zesty, savory pisco with interesting salinity that will cover a lot of bases cocktail-wise.

Rum Examiner: Ron Duran debuts

By |September 18th, 2015|Categories: Duran rum, Rum|0 Comments

Ron Duran 12 year old aged rum from Panama debuts

A new aged rum, named for famed boxing championRoberto Duran, was recently introduced to the U.S. market by Ekeko Fine Wines and Spirits of Houston Texas. Ron Duran 12 year old aged rum, produced by Master Distiller and Blender Don “Pancho” Fernandez ofPanama, was first shown at the Miami Rum Fest Trade Expo in April.

Ekeko today announced that Ron Duran would soon be available widely in leading liquor retailers and venues throughout North America.

Roberto Durán Samaniego is a Panamanian former professional boxer, widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. He retired in 2002 with a record of 120 fights, 104 wins and 69 KOs. The Associated Press voted Duran as the #1 lightweight boxer of the 20th century.

As a tribute to the master fighter, this rum was specially crafted by Don Pancho for strength of character. This exquisite flavor profile is achieved by a blend of rum aged for 12 years in white oak whiskey barrels. Duran rum uses the finest molasses from Panama and is distilled in copper columns using a proprietary yeast from the master blender. Don Pancho developed Duran rum to truly capture the essence of patience, passion, perseverance and triumph.

Aromas of buttery wet oak, cola nut and pistachio lead to creamy dry vanilla, orange blossom, dried fruits and toffee before a subtle hint of anise. On the palate, a well balanced coconut husk entry walks a fine line between sweet and dry as it cascades through cream soda, dark fruit, custard, toasted oak and coconut husk before dry toasted wood with hints of anise. Through the long finish, the palate remains well balanced.

Ron Cartavio XO review by the Lone Caner

By |September 17th, 2015|Categories: Cartavio Rum, Rum|0 Comments

The Lone Caner Reviews Cartavio XO

Soleras as a rule tend toward the smooth and sweet side, and have a rather full body redolent of all sorts of interesting fruity flavours. My maltster friends regard this type of drink the way they would a sherry bomb (or a disrobed virgin, if one desperate enough could be found), with a mixture of hidden liking and puritan disdain. Still, after having had two fairly dry products in as many weeks, perhaps it was time to relax in a perfumed boudoir instead of the sere desert air. And because the Ron Cartavio XO was from Peru and a solera, I tried it together with the Ron Millonario Solera

15 and the Millonario XO which also hail from there, to see how it stacked up.

The Cartavio XO is pretty much the top of the line made by the company and is priced to match . It arrived in a black tin can and had a wooden tipped cork fixed into place by the twisted wire one might look for in a champagne…nice touch. Liked the bottle too… tapering, blocky, rounded shoulders, absolutely minimal design esthetic, and etched in gold (the tin can had most of the info, which was as it should be.

TASTING NOTES

Featuring a beautiful dark mahogany color obtained as a result of prolonged aging in American and Slovenian oak. It is distinguished by its smoothness and complexity as well as its hints of caramel, spices, vanilla and dried fruit. On the palate, it reveals a pleasant chocolate and tobacco flavor topped with a persistent long finish. The packaging of this bottle is beyond reproach. When you have this bottle in hand, it is already clear that at first glance, the contents are of the highest quality.

CONCLUSION

In my opinion the rum Cartavio XO is a must taste for all rum enthusiasts. It is quite difficult to find on the Canadian market ($69 CAD) and fortunately it is available in the American market ($73 US). Personally, I was lucky to have found 2 bottles in Amherst, Nova Scotia (NSLC) for $ 69. It is now available in the USA via Ekeko wines and spirits at the following address:

Examiner.com Cartavio Rum enters new states!

Cartavio rum from Peru expanding U.S. distribution

From the fertile valley of Cartavio in northern Peru, a modern distillery produces pot still and column still rums from local sugar cane, aged in a variety of woods to create a number of award-winning expressions. This is Ron Cartavio rum.

Ekeko Fine Wines and Spirits today announced expanded distribution for Rum Cartavio expressions into several new states.

Although Peru is not generally known for producing some of the world’s best rums, U.S. importer Jim Driscoll of Ekeko Fine Wines and Spirits is hoping to change that perception and help Ron Cartavio rum earn the reputation he believes it deserves.

Ekeko has been importing pisco and wine from Peru for the past three years. On a recent trip to Lima, he and his wife Carole were amazed to discover the quality of this local Peruvian brand of rum.

“We first time we tasted Ron Cartavio, we knew we had to share this with our friends in the U.S.A.,” said Jim. He went to work right away promoting the Cartavio Selecto five year old aged rum and the Solera 12 year old. But Jim believed the one rum that would surely turn heads — that would truly amaze rum enthusiasts — was the 18 year old Ron Cartavio XO, a special aged blend created by Master Distiller Federico Schulz to celebrate the company’s 80th anniversary back in 2009.

One of Jim’s first major presentations was at the Miami Rum Festival and Trade Expo. Thousands of consumers and members of the trade tasted the rum that weekend in April, with excellent results.

In the International Rum Expert Panel (RumXP) tasting competition, Ron Cartavio XO earned the Best In Class Gold Medal in the premium rum category. And Ron Cartavio XO also took a Best In Class Gold Medal in the Consumer Rum Jury awards.

“For a rum to win both the rum expert’s top award and the consumer jury’s top award was unprecedented,” said Jim. “These accolades and recognition — along with the great feedback we received from the people of Miami and the rum experts — reinforced our belief that Ron Cartavio XO is certainly one of the best rums in the world, even if few people knew about it yet. I could see I had a big job cut out for me.”

Parlaying on their recent success, Ekeko has begun opening up distribution for Ron Cartavio rum all over the United States, starting in Florida, Texas, California, New York and Illinois. They also added accessible silver and black expressions to their line of rums imported in the country.

Now, with more than 20 awards and greatly increased visibility, Ekeko will bring Ron Cartavio to the California Rum Festival in San Francisco in September. Festivities will continue with exotic cocktails and educated rum tastings at Longitude in Oakland, a bar that specializes in rum and cocktails.

To say that Jim Driscoll is optimistic about the success of Ron Cartavio rums is an understatement. “We expect to begin distributing Ron Cartavio in Georgia, the Carolinas and Washington state within the next few months.”

With undaunted entrepreneurial spirit, genuine passion and a love for these Peruvian discoveries, Ekeko is working hard to earn Ron Cartvio a coveted place on the menus of fine bars and restaurants, as well as the shelves of liquor stores across the country.

Interview with Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernández – Ron Duran Master Distiller

By |August 27th, 2015|Categories: Duran rum, Rum|0 Comments

Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernández

Ron Duran – Master Distiller

1) Bucket List items for this year.

  1. I would like to go to a rum festival in Berlin
  2. Celebrate my 77th birthday
  3. Spend a lot of time enjoying my grandchildren
  4. See all our brand strategies successfully executed
  5. Develop new concepts for the US Market such as a new Caña Brava Rum profile

 2) What is the biggest achievement you personally feel you have accomplish for the rum industry

The biggest achievement one can ask for is to reach the goals one has set up for them self. I took up a project a couple of years ago to develop my own 30 year aged rum. I did it without consulting anyone and created a profile that was something I would like, taking the risk that others may not feel the same way. I was happy to succeed and people loved it.

3) Favorite Drink + Recipe

I am not a fan of mixed drinks because I am not really in to sweet drinks. I do consider the best cocktail to be a classic rum, sugar, lime, and mint, also known as a mojito. I don´t like rum and cokes.

4) Where do you see the rum industry today and in the next 5 years?

I see it being on the top. Right now the rum category is positioning itself in a very important way. The industrial rums are falling behind in relation to quality but the premium, aged and rums formulated using the true characteristics of rum are creating a positive outlook for the image of the category.

5) Share some (2-3) of your mentors and how they have helped you.

The first mentor I ever had in the rum industry was with me since I was a child, my father. Later on, once I earned my degree in Bio Chemistry and my specialization in microbiology, I had another Cuban mentor. He was a mentor who definitely knew everything about rum. I am talking about Ramon Fernandez Corrales (RIP). Almost everything I learned was from him. With the gift of good taste buds I got from my genetics and great mentors I have had a lot of success in the industry. My unique palate has given me the ability to develop many products based on what I like, and the results have been amazing.

6) Any last words?

I am very excited about my latest child, Ron Duran. I have seen it grow with great success that began in Panama and I am watching as it now reaches to expand internationally where I believe it will exemplify the future of the rum industry.

Interview with Federico Shulz – Cartavio Rum Master Blender

By |August 26th, 2015|Categories: Cartavio Rum, Rum|0 Comments

Federico Shulz

Cartavio Rum Master Blender

1) Bucket List items for this year.

  1. To launch an amazing new expression of Ron Cartavio.
  2. Experiment with new blends of light and heavy rums.
  3. Continue working on 3 exciting new developments
 2) Biggest achievement you personally feel you have accomplished for the rum industry.

In 1985 we started the project to build a rum factory in Lima, Peru; in 1994 the Peruvian State Mark stopped our operations and we lost 18,000 barrels containing some great rum. Today however, we not only recovered the industry but we have over 43,000 barrels and have made many technological contributions to the industry. One example is our Ron Cartavio XO, which uses an innovation with 100 liter barrels and a unique handling right up to bottling.

3) Favorite Drink + Recipe

The Mojito:
Several mint leaves (spearmint)
2 tablespoons sugar
3 cl. lemon juice
4 cl. white rum
Schweppes soda water

Method:
In a Collins glass, we add the sugar, lemon juice and mint leaves (spearmint). Muddle to extract the flavor from the leaves. Then we add ice, rum and soda. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

4) Where do you see the rum industry today and in the next 5 years?

I personally see sustained growth in our industry in many countries, especially those that make good rum and find opportunities to break into new markets where they compete through quality and value.

5) Share some (2-3) of your mentors and how they have help you.

  1. Mr. Ignacio Fierro Viña, President of the GIF Group (Grupo Iberoamericano de Fomento)
  2. Mr. Raul Morales Vargas, Plant Superintendent for Seagram’s of Costa Rica S.A.

6) Any last words?

A special greeting to all Master Blenders of the rum industry and an invitation to continue innovating in this art.
